As most of the United States is recovering from cold and frigid temperatures and watching the snow melt, the majority of the population of 18-24 year olds are gearing up for their annual vacation known to many as “spring break.”
To the many headed down to resort vacations to places like Florida, Mexico and other places with warm and sunny beaches, excessive alcohol consumption seems to be passed off as a normal part of spring break vacation. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “students who vacationed with friends during spring break dramatically increased their alcohol use.” However the study also found that those who did not attend spring break were at “low risk” for excessive alcohol use.
Those abusing alcohol during this holiday aren’t the only ones responsible, as alcoholic beverage companies capitalize on this time of year and promote the dangerous behavior by sponsoring events at the spring break hot spots, where too much drinking and lewd behavior is often well promoted. The result for many of these young adults can include serious problems such as binge drinking, alcohol dependency, promiscuity, aggressive or violent behaviors and arrests.
A recent study also found that 40% of women and 50% of men on spring break admitted to excessive use of alcohol and some reported being intoxicated every day during their spring break vacation. Additional statistics showed that men on spring break who consumed alcohol drank an average of 18 drinks a day and women drink 10 drinks per day.
For many students spring break can appear as a carefree time away, but unfortunately it can also be a time where behaviors can develop into something more routine, indicating a serious need for intervention. If these habits continue, a much greater risk for dependency and addiction develops and people who are intoxicated are also more likely to try other drugs as well.
