Guests of the International conference, some of whom have worked in the network for up to 40 years, arrived from centers in the Eastern and Western United States, United Kingdom, Nepal, Russia, Sweden, Italy, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and South Africa.

The first day’s schedule was highlighted with a trip to Narconon Arrowhead, the international training center of the Narconon network. The visit consisted of a tour of the center and attending its weekly graduation with over 200 students who are studying the Narconon program. There was not a dry eye left in the room as students spoke of their successes and life changing wins.

The Narconon program is comprised of eight parts and students graduate from each one. Project Graduation is an event held nationwide to provide a safe, alcohol-free and drug-free environment which offers various activities for seniors on graduation night.  Project Graduation began locally in Denham Springs in 2002 in response to the many hazardous and often harmful choices available on graduation night.

Suncoast Rehabilitation Center at RX Drug Abuse Summit

RX Drug Abuse Summit

The third stage is the blackouts. At this stage, as the person drinks more and more he does not remember some events that happened during intoxication. This can be alarming to the drinker when it first happens and then he becomes indifferent to the blackouts.  He becomes blind to the disadvantages of excessive drinking.

During the fourth stage, the drinker and his body start experiencing difficulties:  physical problems start to appear, they shy away from the social circles, and financial and work issues begin.

The fifth stage is withdrawal.  During this stage the body is used to receiving a certain dose of alcohol and if it is not consumed the drinker will experience withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, trembling and heavy sweating.

The sixth stage is losing of control. This is the stage where the drinker starts self-treatment. The alcoholic attempts to reduce or quit alcohol, but cannot do it. Finding no success, the alcoholic continues with the bad habit.

What’s also of interest is how teens have found a substitute, with the same “kick” as the real marijuana, hashish and other cannabis in Spice or K2.  The fake marijuana can be easily be procured through convenience stores, gasoline station, etc., which is disguised as “herbal incenses”.

Reason why Marijuana is Addictive

What makes marijuana addictive? The weed contains Tetrahydrocannabinol (TCH), a substance that excites the cannabinoid receptors of the brain. This neurotoxin, when it goes to the brain creates a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to a “high”. The cannabinoid receptors influence pleasure, thinking, sensory, time perception, memory and movement of the body and if a person is under marijuana intoxication, these receptors are too stimulated  and this  can cause an  impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking, distorted perception, problem solving and problem with learning and memory. Teens Change Perception of Marijuana Use

The rise in marijuana use among teenagers is being attributed to their changing perception of its health risks. The Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey shows that teens today have lowered their view of the “perceived risk” of marijuana, fake or real, meaning they now think marijuana is not as harmful as previously promoted. Consequently, teen drug use rises while teen alcohol use is declining.   The study shows  an increase  to 36.4% from 32 % in 2007 of teenagers using marijuana over alcohol and cigarette.

Her ballooning weight worried her so much that she resorted to gastric bypass surgery to get rid of extra weight. As a result, she lost about 130 pounds.

Getting a new found confidence was what Patty needed. She was no longer hiding and she found a new support group for people who lost a great deal of weight. In order to strengthen the bond, the members of the group would socialize weekly for a party, camping and other events. Ever present at these gathering was alcohol.  Patty was soon battling an addiction to alcohol.

Narconon Riverbend Louisiana Easter Egg Hunt

Denham Springs, LA – Narconon Riverbend in Louisiana, an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center, celebrated its 7 ^th Annual Easter Celebration with students and their families on Sunday, April 8, 2012.  Festivities included an early morning Easter Egg Hunt that awarded prizes for the most Easter eggs collected followed by Easter Dinner and sports events.

The University lab selectively breed mice to create a strain that prefer  to drink alcohol over other liquids presented. The mice drink more alcohol than other animal models and consume it in a fashion similar to humans: choosing alcohol over other options and binge drinking.

The study published in the journal “Addiction Biology” reports that an alcoholic mouse reached a daily blood alcohol level of more than 260 mg/dl.  In human equivalent terms, this is over three times the legal US driving limit and is the consumption level of a sever human alcoholic.

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reports that an estimated 17.6 million Americans are abusing alcohol, or are dependent on alcohol. The agency further states that alcoholism and alcohol abuse cannot be cured only treated.
