Right now, of the more than 5 million citizens of Wisconsin, there are 346,000 people who have reported substance abuse problems within the state during a one month period. But what’s even worse is that of these 346,000 Wisconsin citizens only 122,000 residents reported needing drug treatment. Unfortunately only a small percentage of those individuals actually went into a drug rehab program; around 20,000 per actual reports.

With its rural areas and beautiful landscape no one would guess that Wisconsin had become such a hotbed for drug abuse. There are several thousands of people in the state who are struggling with addictions to methamphetamine and cocaine and marijuana still remains the most widely available and abused drug throughout.

There have also been reports of an increase in the abuse of pharmaceutical drugs like hydrocodone, Vicoden, Ritalin and especially Oxy Contin which is a prescription pain medication similar to heroin.

The state of Wisconsin is in need of successful drug rehab that can help residents throughout the state.

The Narconon program has seen the devastation that addiction can cause to both family members and addicts if left untreated in Wisconsin and all over the northeast. Erica Catton, Director of Promotion for Narconon has worked with many families from Wisconsin whose lives were torn apart as a result of addiction. “Addiction can be handled but the longer it is let go, the worse it gets. I have seen many people who have lost everything as a result of their substance abuse problems because it negatively affects not only the addicted person, but everyone that is involved in that person’s life.”

Wisconsin citizens need to take action to curb drug abuse problems in the state by getting addicts into treatment that works.  If you know someone who needs to get into an effective drug rehab program contact Narconon today at 877-237-3307.

$357 Billion Spent on Consequences of Addiction

Filed under: Narconon, drug and alcohol addiction — Tags: , — nneastus @ 7:07 pm

New CASA study reveals where taxpayer funds have been going in regards to substance abuse issues.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) just released a report on what drug and alcohol addiction cost federal, state and local governments. The figures were astonishingly high - around $467.7 billion in 2005.

But what was even more surprising was that the new 287 page report called Shoveling Up II: The Impact of Substance Abuse on the Federal, State and Local Budgets , found that $357.4 billion of the funds went to handle the consequences of addiction which include things such as child abuse, welfare, crime, healthcare costs, homelessness and several other negative effects.

And while 96.5% of the monies went to handling the effects of substance abuse, only 1.9% of the monies went to drug rehab. A clear outness recognized by the public and CASA as seen in a press release issued by its Chairman, Joseph A. Califano Jr.
In the release, Califano commented, “Under any circumstances spending more than 95 percent of taxpayer dollars on the consequences of tobacco, alcohol and other drug abuse and addiction and less than two percent to relieve individuals and taxpayers of this burden would be considered a reckless misallocation of public funds.”

A misallocation that has cost billions of taxpayer dollars that could have gone to treating the source of the problem instead of the effects of it.

“Treating the consequences of addiction instead of the source will cause major problems,” says Erica Catton, Director of Promotion for Narconon East U.S. “There are many underlying issues that if they are left untreated will cause the addiction to get worse and worse. As a result the individual starts and neglect and destroy those people and things around him, commit crimes, become homeless and even hurts himself and others. At Narconon we believe the only way to truly handle this dwindling spiral is through effective drug rehabilitation.”

And what makes a program effective is that it treats both the mental and physical components of substance abuse issues. This is the way Narconon has been achieving stable results, and a success rate of more than 70% for permanent recovery from addiction. The Narconon program uses a sauna detoxification program that removes residues from the body that are left by drugs, thereby reducing physical cravings. The second half of the program addresses the mental and emotional aspects of addiction through a series of life skills course designed to increase the ability of the individual and return him to society a productive, ethical, contributing member.

The truth is that without enough allocations going to effective treatment, we will never be able to really do something about the drug problem. Funds appropriated toward drug rehab programs that get results with drug and alcohol addiction would be the smartest investment that we, as a society, could make. Then we would be providing a service that allows people to give back to the community, instead of taking from it.

The Choice Between Jail or Drug Rehab

Should individuals arrested with substance abuse issues have the opportunity to choose their own drug rehab program?

The Bureau of Justice recently reported that around of two-thirds of inmates in prison admitted to struggling with substance abuse issues. Drug abuse is directly connected with crime in the United States and many would never see the inside of prison walls if they were not drug addicted.

And addiction and crime to do not discriminate – affecting individuals from all walks of life, from different socio-economic backgrounds. In fact additional statistics indicate that more than half of prison inmates reported that they were under the influence of drugs in the month they committed their current offense and another one third of inmates were under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at the time when they committed the crimes they were currently doing time for.

An example of this that has been in the news frequently is the story of Redmond O’Neal who is the son of Ryan O’Neal actress Farrah Fawcett. O’Neal was arrested for bringing drugs into a jail parking lot as well as possession of narcotics several months ago and was sentenced to time in prison. He was then given the chance to enroll in a one year long drug rehab program as long as he remained off drugs.

This decision was made by the courts, which chose the drug treatment program for the 24-year-old who was not allowed to enter a private drug rehab center. Reports have indicated that he is currently doing well in treatment but in a situation such as this whose responsibility should it be to find the right drug treatment program?

Choosing the method of treatment for the individual with a limited knowledge of their drug and treatment history is a difficult task for a judge but given the circumstances should the family and/or the addict be able to decide what type of treatment options suits them best?

Erica Catton, Director of Promotion for Narconon Eastern US knows from experience that the correct way to treat someone with substance abuse issues is to do a full assessment of their needs and treatment history in order to find the right program. “Many of the clients I have worked with over the years have needed a treatment program that handles all of the symptoms as well as the underlying reasons for their drug use,” says Catton. “Narconon has dealt with many individuals over the years that have had legal difficulties as a result of their addictions so the main goal has always been to return the person back into society as a productive, ethical and drug-free member so they can leave the system permanently.”

And this is one of the reasons why the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program is so successful. Over the years the Narconon has enrolled many clients with court orders and gotten excellent results by using their standard method of handling both the mental physical aspects of the addiction.

The way that Narconon does this is through a sauna detoxification method that removes drug resides from the body and helps to eliminate physical cravings caused by drugs. The second half of the program handles the mental and emotional aspects of addiction through several life skills courses, increasing the ability of the individual.
When someone is court ordered to complete a drug rehab program they should have more motivation to change their behavior. If they go into the right drug treatment program that does focus on rehabilitating the individual mentally and physically they will achieve positive results and stop committing crimes.

If you or a loved one is in need of a drug rehab program with positive results and long-term success for treating addiction contact Narconon today at 877-237-3307.
