Handling Addiction the Narconon Way

Narconon drug rehab outlines how a drug addiction starts in the first place and points out steps to successful recovery.

With over 22 million people struggling with substance abuse you have to wonder why and how a person could get addicted to drugs in the first place. Is it genetic; a disease; a mental disorder; or does addiction encompass a much simpler concept?  This is something that has been debated throughout the ages and amongst doctors, psychiatrists and even within drug rehab programs.

There is evidence to support some of the above. According to a recent study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse addiction has been compared to chronic illnesses such as Diabetes, Hypertension and even Asthma. But herein lies the problem of recovery and the product of drug rehab which should be to get a person to stop using drugs permanently.

A much simpler concept of why substance abuse starts has proven to be more accurate – that addiction actually begins with some type of central problem in the individual’s life that they are unable to deal with.  This problem could encompass a variety of things; some may have struggled with some type of family abuse, while others may have experienced some type of loss in life. Things like a divorce, or a death would fall into this category.

According to Narconon , a long-term inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, until these components are fully handled the individual is unable to stop using drugs and, in some cases, even with drug rehab, will continue to relapse.

“In every patient we see, there is some type of problem or issue that has led them into the addiction in the first place,” says Erica Catton Director of Promotion for Narconon. “But the mechanics behind it is that by helping to bring these problems to the surface and giving the person skills to handle them, they then won’t have to go back to using drugs as a solution to a problem. They can be free from addiction.”

This technology is one main component of the Narconon program. Narconon also utilizes a unique therapy overcome the physical aspect of addiction using a sauna detoxification method to remove drug residues from the body and reduce physical drug cravings. The program has been helping addicts since 1964 and has a more than 70% success rate for permanent sobriety.

“With the different schools of thought out there regarding addiction, many think that it is hopeless,” explains Catton. “But the truth is that a person can stop using drugs permanently. Full recovery from substance abuse is possible not matter how severe the underlying issues can be.”

Many Alcoholics Are Going Without Treatment

According to the 2008 data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) survey,  there were 19.3 million people in the United States who fell under the criteria for needing alcohol treatment. However, only about 8% of these people actually ended up going into a rehabilitation facility .  The survey also found that while another four and a half percent realized they had an alcohol problem, they decided not to get help through some form of treatment.

In addition, the survey states that the remaining 87% neither received nor perceived a need for rehab. The criteria looked at for treatment was withdrawal, tolerance, legal troubles, alcohol use in dangerous situations and interference of alcohol in obligations such as home, school and/or work.

The reasons for those not getting treatment varied. Some people reported not being ready to quit abusing alcohol while others stated that cost and insurance barriers got in the way of going into a rehabilitation facility .

To many in the addiction treatment field, these reasons are not surprising. “The two main barriers to getting into a rehabilitation program that we have seen are the ones outlined by SAMHSA,” explains Erica Catton Director of Promotion for Narconon Eastern U.S. “But with more than 8% of our population addicted to alcohol, making successful treatment more available is the best solution to ending this problem.”

Alcohol abuse and addiction cost Americans billions of dollars and many thousands of lives each year.  It is also a major contributing factor in many other societal problems, such as the spread of disease, domestic violence, teen pregnancy and automobile accidents.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there is an average of 79,000 alcohol-related deaths each year and excessive alcohol use is currently the third leading lifestyle-related cause of death for citizens of the United States.

“There was no doubt in my mind as to whether something extremely tragic would result from my drinking,” claims a former alcoholic named Aaron. “I was very fortunate to not have killed someone else or myself because of all of the stupid things I did when I was drunk.  Thankfully my family found the right help for me before it was too late.”

Aaron went to a Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and has now been sober for ten years.  Narconon has several long-term treatment facilities throughout the country that have a success rate of more than 70% for permanent sobriety.

Dean enrolled in the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and throughout the program he started seeing many positive changes in himself. There was one part of the program in particular that raises the ability of the individual to control his own environment that Dean mentions he had the greatest achievement with while undergoing treatment.  He was able to unstick himself from the past and look forward to the future without drugs in his life for the first time in three decades.

Narconon Leads the Way on Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention

According to Narconon of Georgia, one of the simplest ways to prevent prescription drug abuse is to clean out your medicine cabinet.

The National Institute on Drug Abus e reports that 48 million people over the age of 12 have used a prescription drug for a non-medical reason. That figure constitutes nearly 20% of the entire population of the United States.  Currently prescription drugs are the second most commonly abused drugs in the country, coming in behind alcohol, with an average of 100,000 people dying each year as a result of prescription drug abuse.

The most surprising fact about prescription addicts is that most can easily get their fix by going into a friend or family member’s medicine cabinet and abusing prescription medications left behind unknowingly by the person who was prescribed them by a doctor for an illness or injury.

In order to stop this ever-growing problem and reduce prescription drug abuse the Narconon Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Program in Georgia just launched Operation Medicine Cabinet.
A campaign sponsored by both Narconon® of Georgia and a local Sheriff’s department, provides people with a safe way to properly dispose of unused and potentially dangerous medications that they may have left in their homes.

"Operation Medicine Cabinet" was put in place to educate the community on the dangers of prescription drug and promote the need for effective treatment for those already addicted.  Narconon of Georgia operates a long-term drug rehab program that specializes in prescription drug addiction and achieves a more than 70% success rate for permanent sobriety.

“We are very proud of the Operation Medicine Cabinet campaign launched by our Narconon center in Georgia.”  Says Erica Catton, Director of Promotion at Narconon East U.S. “We want all our centers to join this campaign, working with their local authorities to increase awareness in their communities of how easily people can get prescriptions and what simple steps they can take to help keep their families safe.”

For more information on "Operation Medicine Cabinet" and how you can start this campaign in your community, contact Narconon of Georgia at 770-379-0208 or Narconon East U.S. at 877-237-3307.

After Drug Rehab, Is Relapse A Part Of Recovery?

Filed under: Narconon, drug rehab — Tags: , — nneastus @ 8:45 pm

Drug addiction treatment has been put in place to stop the use of drugs and return individuals back to society as being productive, ethical and drug-free. There is much research that supports the benefits of drug rehabilitation, such as reduced criminal behavior, reduced disease and other related health problems, as well as an overall improvement societal functioning. However, there is a bit of disagreement as to the length of sobriety an individual can attain through drug rehab and if permanent recovery can be reached through successful treatment.

Part of this disagreement stems from the definitions used for what is considered addiction and what is recovery?  And the underlying, unsubstantiated theory:  Is addiction a chronic disease?

According to a document released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, entitled Principals of Drug Addiction Recovery , relapse with addiction is often compared to chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.  The document also adds that the relapse rate for addiction is between 40% and 60% which is actually more than those suffering from diabetes but a bit less than individuals with asthma or hypertension. This theory has contributed to “fear of treatment” with many addicts who feel that even with drug rehab , they will not remain clean and sober.

There is however direct evidence against these disease theories produced by the thousands of addicts who do receive effective treatment each year and maintain their permanent sobriety.
One program that produces a large number of permanent recovery cases on a continual basis is the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Since 1966, Narconon has achieved a more than 70% success rate for permanent sobriety from addiction. The program has graduated more than 25,000 addicts just since 1995 with the belief that addiction is not a disease and that an individual can fully overcome substance abuse.

Sarah Cline is one example of this as a former heroin addict and graduate from the Narconon program in 2001. “I was doing $100.00 worth of heroin per day and Narconon was the first drug rehab program I was ever admitted to,” she explains. “Through their treatment I was able to put my addiction behind me forever. I have been sober for 8 years now. When I finished Narconon substance abuse was no longer a part of my life.”

The theory that addiction is a disease is just that; a theory. An individual can overcome a drug addiction problem with the right type of drug treatment.
